Empowering the next generation of innovative leaders

FAQs

We are excited that our program has transitioned to a new name: the Terrapin Innovation Leadership Program. Previously affiliated with Southern Management, this change marks an important step in the program’s evolution as we continue to support transfer students and foster innovation and leadership at the University of Maryland.

The change is effective as of July 6, 2026.

What’s Changing?

  • Program Structure: The program is now a 2-year experience exclusive to University of Maryland students.
  • Eligibility: It remains exclusive to transfer students from Montgomery College and Prince George’s Community College, but students will now express interest in the program during their application to UMD, rather than applying while at community college.

What’s Staying the Same?

The program’s core mission and features remain consistent:
  • Location: We are still based in Marie Mount Hall.
  • Academics: Students will continue to earn a minor in Technology Entrepreneurship and Corporate Innovation in exclusive class sections.
  • Workshops: Our professional development and social workshops continue to inspire and prepare students for success.
  • Scholarships: The program remains committed to providing impactful financial support to help students complete their UMD degree.

The program is not currently accepting new applicants. The program is exclusively for transfer students from Montgomery College and Prince George’s Community College who have earned their associates degree prior to enrolling at University of Maryland.

Very minimally. Students will continue to take classes to earn the minor in Technology Entrepreneurship and Corporate Innovation and receive all the same support as previous cohorts of students.

Alumni are welcome to join our Terrapin Innovation Leadership Program LinkedIn group. They may continue to refer to themselves as alumni of the Hillman Entrepreneurs Program or Southern Management Leadership Program, or they can adopt the new name!

We are actively searching for new sources of program support. You can make a gift directly to the Terrapin Innovation Leadership Program. If your company is interested in a partnership with the program and its talented students, please contact director Sara Herald. All funds go directly to this program and enable promising students to develop essential skills for professional success and graduate from the University of Maryland.
